Travelling Waves at Middlesbrough Mela

Saturday 16th – Sunday 17th August 2019, Albert Park, Middlesbrough

Travelling Waves is a site-specific installation on display for the duration of Middlesbrough Mela 2019 commissioned by the Mela and Creative Factory Middlesbrough.

The artwork is a visual and sound installation that is made of undulating waves and colourful boats accompanied by music and sounds of the sea. Visitors can listen to excerpts from ‘Stories of Sanctuary‘: a collection of songs that were curated by musicians Sam Slatcher and Raghad Haddad as part of a community storytelling project. The project brought together people from different backgrounds in County Durham, through sharing stories of seeking sanctuary in the region.

The installation responds to the sound piece by representing the challenging journeys undertaken by people who have travelled far from their countries by sea, in search of a better life.

With special thanks to Teesside Launchpad and Teesside University.
